The teenagers killed in a shooting outside of their apartment Friday night are remembered as role models in Kansas City’s Somali Muslim community. The night they died, 16-year-old Abdulwahid Abdulaziz and his 14-year-old brother Adbirahman led prayers at their mosque observing Ramadan. Their final prayers were recorded and shared on the mosque’s YouTube page. Hassan is Director of Education at the Somali Center of Kansas City. He taught the young men who were preparing to become Imams. “We cannot choose anyone to be Imam. It should be a role model. He should be well trusted in everything, in his character, in his morals, in his knowledge and the such so we are preparing them for this and they did fit that position because of their beautiful characters,” said Hassan. “Imam should be like old man, mature man. To assign a kid it means that first he memorizes the whole Quran along with studying Islamic studies.” Hassan also taught their stepbrother Hanad Abdiaziz. He said the 25-year-old also spent a lot of time at the mosque and was respectful. He was shocked to learn he is accused of killing his brothers. “The man was praying like a few minutes before he killed his brothers, he was praying behind them here.” Kansas City Missouri police said the teenagers were shot outside of their apartment about 11:30 Friday night after returning home from Ramadan services.
