London and Middlesex County have become the epicentre of Ontario’s crystal methamphetamine crisis. The Middlesex London Health Unit (MLHU) has created a new data dashboard that charts the growing crystal meth crisis— and the deadly trend is chilling. From 2018 to 2020, methamphetamine death rates in London and Middlesex County more than tripled, and are now 2.8 times higher than the provincial average. At Coffee Time and Gay Bath House on Dundas Place, owner Michael Richards has witnessed the street drug’s rapid emergence and devastating effects. “It really negatively impacts you. And you try so hard not to be judgemental,” admits Richards. On Thanksgiving Monday, he closed the coffee shop earlier than planned after four separate incidents involving people displaying erratic behaviours that he attributes to meth’s effects as a stimulant. “It’s very hard to run a business while at the same time, be a mental health worker and protect your staff,” he adds. The intent of the MLHU’s data dashboard is to identify trends and help prioritize steps needed to alleviate the crystal meth crisis. <SNIP> LINK

Michael Durant is guilty of the second-degree murder of a 32-year-old Niagara Falls woman. Superior Court Justice Gerald Taylor, who conducted the trial without a jury, rendered his verdict in a Kitchener courtroom Tuesday, almost two decades after the offence was committed. A jury convicted Durant of the murder at a 2012 trial in Welland. However, the Court of Appeal overturned the decision in 2019. “They say when you finally realize what happened and the guilty get caught and punished, there will be some closure,” the woman’s father said in a victim-impact statement. “Whoever came up with that must have never lost anyone to a violent crime. This will never come close to any so-called closure.” Durant, 47, was found guilty of killing the woman in August 2003. Her body was discovered in a ditch near Darby and Grassybrook roads on the outskirts of Niagara Falls near Welland. Taylor said he wasn’t convinced beyond a reasonable doubt that the planning and deliberation necessary for a first-degree murder conviction were present. Durant’s now ex-wife Dana Arnold testified she arrived home from work on the night of the murder and, following Durant’s instructions, backed her car into the garage. Durant then locked the victim in the trunk, and they drove to the rural area between Niagara Falls and Welland, where Durant dumped her in a ditch. A pathologist testified that the woman died of blunt force trauma, consistent with a hammer attack. LINK
