3. Santa Rosa Hitch Hike Murders
The Santa Rosa hitchhiker murders were a series of at least seven unsolved homicides involving female hitchhikers that took place in Sonoma County and Santa Rosa of the North Bay area of California in 1972 and 1973. All of the victims were found nude in rural areas near steep embankments or in creek beds near roads. In 1975, the FBI issued a report stating that fourteen unsolved homicides between 1972 and 1974 were committed by the same perpetrator. These consist of the six found victims (as of 1975) also. Some of these were thought to be the crimes of the Zodiac Killer or even Ted Bundy. But those theories were later thrown out.
February 4, 1972, proved to be a tragic day in Sonoma County, California. On that day, two middle school students, Maureen Sterling (left above) and Yvonne Weber (right above), went missing. The pair, both aged 12 and students at Herbert Slater Middle School, spent their last night alive hanging out at the Redwood Empire Ice Arena. A little later, at around 9:00 PM, both girls were seen hitchhiking on Guerneville Road……. Links Listverse

Of the four cryptograms sent, only one has been definitively solved. He murdered five known victims in Benicia, Vallejo, Napa County, and San Francisco respectively between December 1968 and October 1969. He targeted young couples, with two of the men surviving attempted murder. He also murdered a male cab driver. The Zodiac himself once claimed to have murdered 37 victims. The San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) marked the case “inactive” in April 2004, but re-opened it at some point prior to March 2007.The case also remains open in the city of Vallejo, as well as in Napa County and Solano County. The California Department of Justice has maintained an open case file on the Zodiac murders since 1969. Link Wikipedia
